Summary

'Some things are just sitting there, minding their own business, waiting to be discovered。 Like America。 And other things are probably better off left alone'

Nine-year-old Bruno has a lot of things on his mind。 Who is the 'Fury'? Why did he make them leave their nice home in Berlin to go to 'Out-With' ? And who are all the sad people in striped pyjamas on the other side of the fence? The grown-ups won't explain so Bruno decides there is only one thing for it - he will have to explore this place alone。 What he discovers is a new friend。 A boy with the very same birthday。 A boy in striped pyjamas。 But why can't they ever play together?

BACKSTORY: Read an interview with the author JOHN BOYNE and learn all about the Second World War in Germany。

Una historia que te hace reflexionar。

I haven’t watch the film adaptation, probably will not after reading this。 It’s somber。 Unforgettable read that leaves you haunted。

It is such a crushing story about an excruciating time in history。 Loved the story, even after watching the movie。 I would only say the book does nog read out of the eyes of a 9-10 year old。 More out of the eyes of a 6 year old。

A brilliant book that ignited a love of this genre。 An amazing representation of how an era of horror was viewed through a Childs eyes。

A unique and telling perspective。 It makes you think seriously about those who watched passively what the Nazis did, the innocence of kids, and common humanity。 Fantastic ending。

Quick Read。 I had high hopes for this book but it really let me down。 I’d give it 2。5 stars if I was able。 I thought maybe this novel would be similar to The Tattooist of Auschwitz but it’s definitely not。 To sum it up, it is much about a little boy who doesn’t understand what is going on in the World at that time and why the people on the other side of the big fence can’t come to where he lives and he can’t go over there。 Yet, he ends up making a friend with a boy on the other side and tells no Quick Read。 I had high hopes for this book but it really let me down。 I’d give it 2。5 stars if I was able。 I thought maybe this novel would be similar to The Tattooist of Auschwitz but it’s definitely not。 To sum it up, it is much about a little boy who doesn’t understand what is going on in the World at that time and why the people on the other side of the big fence can’t come to where he lives and he can’t go over there。 Yet, he ends up making a friend with a boy on the other side and tells nobody because he doesn’t want to get in trouble。 。。。more

The type of book you know would end in heartbreak but you’d still pick it up bc you know it’s going to be a heartfelt journey。 It was smartly woven with hidden messages and parallels that provoked thoughts and tickled emotions into place。 The story was told from a nine year-old’s pov in a very excellent and convincing manner。 Bruno’s innocence gave a different perspective on the happenings which was both refreshing and sad。 I also loved how the author was very brazen in writing this story, not h The type of book you know would end in heartbreak but you’d still pick it up bc you know it’s going to be a heartfelt journey。 It was smartly woven with hidden messages and parallels that provoked thoughts and tickled emotions into place。 The story was told from a nine year-old’s pov in a very excellent and convincing manner。 Bruno’s innocence gave a different perspective on the happenings which was both refreshing and sad。 I also loved how the author was very brazen in writing this story, not holding back from making the reader experience the ugliness and shock of the tragedy and let me tell you it got way too real by the end Would recommend!! 3。5 stars 。。。more

Me quedo con Bruno, su inocencia y su gran corazón。❤He sentido muchas cosas con este libro y me ha hecho reflexionar más de que que creía。Ojalá nunca más se repita una historia。 💔🥲

I really did enjoy reading this book in school。 It was good to read a book I normally wouldn’t be drawn to and see what else is out there。 The ending was by far the best part tho。 Those last few chapters…The only thing that bothered me was Bruno’s obviously behavior。 I get why the author makes it so apparent throughout the story, but it starts to get annoying after a while

4。7 - I read the illustrated version, which added to the haunting horror of the story; beautifully written, yet terrifyingly troubling

This book took me a couple of days to get into (because I knew how it ended before reading it and I can’t read on the weekends) but it took me one day to finish it because it got so good。 I was multitasking in class to both pay attention and read because I got so in depth in the book。 Would recommend but may be a bit of a tear jerker for some people。

People seem to either love or hate this very short novel written for a younger audience。 If you look at it as a story being narrated by a 9 year old and told as a "fable," it makes sense。 It's sequel All the Broken Places is the one to read。 People seem to either love or hate this very short novel written for a younger audience。 If you look at it as a story being narrated by a 9 year old and told as a "fable," it makes sense。 It's sequel All the Broken Places is the one to read。 。。。more

"All he could say was that his father was a man to watch and that the Fury had big things in mind for him。"It's been fifteen years since I first read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, so I decided to read it again and see how my thoughts and feelings changed about it from then to now。For a nine-year-old boy, Bruno acts even younger than that。 He's absolutely clueless for a boy growing up in Nazi Germany。 Either he's so unobservant of the things going on around him, he's somewhere on the spectrum, "All he could say was that his father was a man to watch and that the Fury had big things in mind for him。"It's been fifteen years since I first read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, so I decided to read it again and see how my thoughts and feelings changed about it from then to now。For a nine-year-old boy, Bruno acts even younger than that。 He's absolutely clueless for a boy growing up in Nazi Germany。 Either he's so unobservant of the things going on around him, he's somewhere on the spectrum, or he has a speech/hearing impediment。 That, or the author really couldn't be bothered to write out "Führer" and "Auschwitz" correctly。 For one example, here's a conversation that happens in chapter 11:"Who's the Fury?''You're pronouncing it wrong,' said Father, pronouncing it correctly for him。'The Fury," said Bruno again。。。" (Boyne 117)See what I mean? And a similar conversation happens between Bruno and his sister; however, it's with the word Auschwitz instead。 Gretel tells him he keeps pronouncing it wrong, but Bruno is adamant that he's not。 Hence that's why I think he's got a hearing/speech impediment, he's somewhere on the spectrum, or a combination of the two。I also had issues with how Bruno says he doesn't know what his father does for a living in the very first chapter; however, in chapter 13, the reader learns what it is Bruno wants to do when he grows up。 The book tells us as follows:"I'm going to be a soldier,' said Bruno in a determined voice。 'Like my father。" (139)So, does that mean Bruno knew his father was a soldier this whole time? He could have told his friends that his dad's a soldier。 But he doesn't because when his friends asked what Bruno's dad did, the reader is told that Bruno "。。。 didn't know himself" (5)。 So, how and when did Bruno finally figure out that his dad's a high-ranking soldier? I mean, it's very possible it said it somewhere between the first and thirteenth chapter, and I missed it。Also, it seems unbelievable that Bruno would have zero knowledge about what was going on。 He's nine。 As soon as he turned ten, he'd be participating in Deutsches Jungvolk, the junior branch of Hitler Youth。 In fact, I think it'd be expected for him to join the Hitler Youth since his father's a high-ranking officer。Those are only a couple of the issues I had with the book。The saving grace was the narrator of the audiobook。 Michael Maloney gave it his all; his performance was never lacking。 Maloney gets a complete set of 5 stars for his great narration skills and delivery。I guess I should have left this book alone。 I should have let it remain in my memories as being just an "okay" read。 But now, I find it to be so incredibly problematic。Therefore, I'm revising my rating from being 2 stars to 0。0000001 out of 5 stars。 。。。more
